« For me, dance has this fascinating power of materializing the thrill of passions. It is from that perspective that romanticism and related subjects such as love, death and the fantastic appeared as a tool for choreographic research. (…) I want to strip the body of all humanity so that only the essence of an emotion emerges, which human beings would have hastened to interpret. The day breaks, a voice… For a poetic moment, Arthur Perole gives life to five vampire-like, ethereal beings, five performers of brazen youth, symbols of eternal beauty, of eternal purity… The genius of Wagner’s preludes and Baudelaire’s Flowers of Evil constantly hovers over this chiseled production, written in resonance with the rhythm of the poetic phrasing, where Wagnerian power and bodily tension rise in a delicate balance. Their works come together in the same dismal and melancholy aesthetic: the gesture is refined and precise, the movement slow, the slowness abstract, the composition cinematographic. And if the dance flirts here and there with pompous, even kitschy style, it is in all conscience: the choreographer has chosen to explore lyrical expressionism as a possible escape for the audience. Stimmlos, Arthur Perole’s first work, lays the foundations of his writing, of his relationship to time and space.
